The Parisian brand is renowned for engineering "time instrument of the cockpit to the wrist" square-case watches with a round dial. The dial of the new BR 03-92 HUD is inspired of the Head-Up-Display installed in modern jets. With its black ceramic case and its green sapphire glass,
the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 HUD looks like a night-vision aviation instrument on the wrist. An original and cool watch, only 999 pieces will be produced.

Bell & Ross is developing aviation-inspired watches.
The design of the BR 03-09 HUD is inspired from the Head-Up-Display (HUD) now installed in every modern jets. The HUD setup is a transparent window reflecting in front of the pilot the plane informations initally displayed on a TV screen. The pilot can thus see through the cockpit and read the plane informations displayed in usually light green color. This system was initially installed in the military jets, but it is also now available in commercial jets and even modern cars nowadays.

The Bell & Ross BR 03-09 HUD has a matt black ceramic 42 x 42 nm2 case.
Square watches usually looks bigger on the wrist than their size suggests.
The lug-to-lug separation is around 52 mm but the watch height of 10 mm is a bit smaller than typical Bell & Ross instrument-on-the-wrist models.
The watch wears just fine on a 16 cm circumference wrist.
Decorative screws, giving the cockpit-instrument aspect to the watch, are located in the four corner of the square case.

The black dial of the Bell & Ross BR 03-09 HUD is protected by a green sapphire crystal.
Four right angles delimiting an imaginary square are painted with green Super-LumiNova on the sapphire crystal.
The all the tracks indices on the main dial are also painted with green Super-LumiNova.
Arabic numerals are painted every five minute on the minute track, and the 3, 6, 9, and 12 hour indices are also represented by Arabic numeral. The other hour indices are represented by baton indices.
It should be noticed that the main dial is not flat. The minute track is printed on a step separating the minute index disk from the hour index disk.

A date window is located at 4.5 o'clock. The date is printed on a black background.
The date window is thus very discrete.
At the opposite of the dial, at 7.5 o'clock, is located a logo composed of "Ltd" in a circle.
This logo is symmetrical to the date window and helps keeping the harmony of the dial.

No hour hand on the Br 03-92 HUD.
The hours are indicated by a luminescent arrow painted on a rotating central disk.
The minutes are indicated by a fully luminescent baton hand, whereas the seconds are indicated by another baton hand, where only half the length is luminescent.

The BR 03-92 HUD is thus powered by a calibre BR-CAL.322 (Sellita SW-300-1 base).
The Sellita base has been modified to control the rotating hour disk.
This caliber beats at 28'800 v/h and has a power reserve of 42 h.

Verdict
You probably noticed there are a lot of vintage-inspired pilot watch releases these days.
It is thus quite refreshing to see Bell & Ross proposing a modern-inspired pilot watch.
For a long time I wasn't very attracted to the "time instrument of the cockpit to the wrist" style of the bell & Ross watches, but since I reviewed the great B05, I changed my mind.
The Bell & Ross BR 03-92 HUD is a very attractive watch for all those who like fighter jets.
The green luminescent parts of the watch dial and the matt ceramic case perfectly remind the interior of a fighter cockpit by night. Bell & Ross cleverly exploited the optical properties of the green sapphire glass.
I also enjoyed seeing the specific feature to indicate the hours; no hand but a rotating disk.
It is great feeling to wear a watch, which is truly original.
Overall despite its polarizing style, I mean everybody does not like jets, the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 HUD is a funny and cool watch to wear. Sure it will look weird with a tuxedo or a suit, but with a leather jacket, it will look great.
