The new Glashütte Original SeaQ is a homage to the Glashütte Spezimatic Type RP TS 200, produced in 1969.
At that time Glashütte was part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), East Germany. The company was producing functional and affordable watches. Time changed, as Glashütte is now associated to luxury watches.

The Glashütte Original SeaQ has a 39.50mm diameter and 12.15mm high stainless steel case. I am glad Glashütte didn't go to an oversized case. To my opinion the 40mm diametre range is the most suitable size for a three-hand diver, especially when considering a retro-edition of a vintage model. The case is satin brushed, except the edges, which are polished. |

The watch has s galvanic black with a sunray finish. Large Arabic numerals are visible at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 o'clock. The other indices adopt the baton shape. |

The large Arabic numerals and indices are not applied by painted in white with Faux-patina Super-LumiNova in their center. The minute-track is painted in white color. The dial is protected by a domed sapphire crystal. |

A framed date window is located at 3 o'clock. The date is painted in black color on a white background. It denotes a bit with the overall design of the watch, a Faux-patina colored background would have been more appropriated to not break the color harmony of the indices. |

The watch has silver-color hour and minute hands, filled with faux-patina Super-LumiNova. The hour hand adopts a pencil shape, the minute hand an arrow shape and the second hand a lollipop shape, respectively. |

The Glashütte Original SeaQ has a uni-directional rotating bezel with a black ceramic inlay and a white 60-minute track. |

The watch is powered by an in-house automatic movement 39-11. This caliber has a power reserve of 40h. That is a bit disappointing. A 60-70h power reserve is now the standard.
The watch features hours, minutes, seconds and date complications.

The watch has a steel case back, with engraved on a wavy background a trident with the Glashütte Double-G logo. The watch number is also mentioned on the case back, just below the trident.

Verdict
As you should now know, I have a soft spot for retro-inspired and re-edition watches,
so I was impatient to put my hands on the Glashütte Original SeaQ.
I have not been disappointed. First I really appreciate that the watch comes in a standard 40mm diametre case.
Most of all I love the sunburst black dial. The indices are huge, I love the font used by Glashütte, especially the number 6. The alternation between Arabic numerals and baton indices makes the watch looks special. I usually prefer applied indices, this is not the case here but the faux-patina Super-LumiNova is so thick, that the indices adopt a nearly 3D profile. The white border surrounding the indices also accentuates this effect. In addition the domed sapphire create nice distorsions on the dial, the effect is as great as the one observed with the hesalite glass on the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch.
I have to say that I was first a bit skeptical about the arrow shape of the minute hand (I am used that the hour hand looks thicker/bigger than the minute hand), but I in fact found it works quite well and it surprisingly doesn't puzzle me and it does not affect the legibility of the watch. My only complain concerns the 40h power reserve of the caliber, I would have liked a bit more.
Overall the SeaQ is a lovely retro-vintage inspired diver watch. It is a model that accurately celebrate its ancestor and it is a model that is far to be another rip off the Submariner design as was too often see. The last time I saw a re-edition so nicely made was the
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Barracuda Limited Edition. The Barakuda quality seems however higher but it costs 5'000€ more (if you can find one now, what I highly doubt about it). Let's say that the price of the SeaQ puts it in between the Rolex Submariner and the BlancPain Barakuda. Keep however in mind that from these three models, the SeaQ is the only one that you can currently find in your AD. The SeaQ is a great looking retro-inspired diver, a tool-watch with a sunburst black dial and handsome big indices, it would be a mistake to not consider it.
