Classic design, excellent finish, amaizing clean dial despite small seconds and power reserve features, Grand Seiko shows its "savoir faire" in engineering luxury watches with the sublime SBGK007.

Grand Seiko Elegance SBGK007

Grand Seiko is the luxury line of the Seiko company. Until recently the Grand Seiko watches were only available on the Japanese market, fortunately it is now possible to find them in Europe, especially in Paris with the new opening of the Grand Seiko boutique place Vendôme. The Elegance line is the dressier watch collection of Grand Seiko.

The Grand Seiko Elegance SBGK0007 has a 39 mm diameter and 11.6 mm high stainless steel case. 39 mm large is a great size for a three hand dress watch with little complications. The Lug-to-lug separation is 44 mm only. The watch wears amazingly well on a 16 cm circumference wrist.

The case is satin-brushed on the flanks, whereas the highly-reflective case top surface has been polished using the famous Grand Seiko Zaratsu technique.

The dial looks surprisingly clean for a dial supporting complications. The silver-white dial has a subtle shinny finish. The dial is not really white or silver but it plays beautifully with the external light. The hours are indicated by metal hour applied facetted markers. The design of these indices is quite elaborate.

The watch has hour and minute dauphine hands. These hands have sharp tilted edge, to induce additional light reflections. The different facets of the indices and the hand surfaces are nicely playing with the external light, giving to the dial some sparkling effect. The dial is protected by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatments.

The power reserve indicator is located on the dial at 3 o'clock, whereas the small second dial is located at 6 o'clock.

The applied GS logo is located just below the 12 o'clock index. "Grand Seiko" is painted in black color just below. The bottom part of the dial, below the hand axis remains clean.

In contrast with the main dial, the small second track and the power reserve scale have a matte finish. Depending of the external light, these scales can appear lighter or darker than the main dial.

The watch is powered by a modern in-house caliber 9S63. This manual-winding caliber beats at 28'800 v/h and has a nice 72 h power reserve.

The caliber possesses an accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day in static position and +10 to -1 seconds per day in normal use. The caliber has been tested for six different positions and three different temperatures.

The caliber can be seen through the transparent case back. The bridges are decorated with Côtes de Genève. "GS Grand Seiko" is engraved in the bridges and filled with golden color.

The watch comes on a Black Crocodile leather strap with a steel twin-trigger release deployent clasp. The buckle is signed with "Grand Seiko". The black leather strap heavily contrast with the silver dial. All the attention is focused on the beautifull dial dial of the SBGK007.

Verdict

The Grand Seiko Elegance SBGK007 is a very charming watch. It is maybe not the first watch to be noticed in the Grand Seiko display, but it looks amazing on the wrist. Classic, versatile, elegant and low profile, this is a perfect daily wearer.

Despite its classic look, the watch has a beautiful silver-white dial. The watch works well as a daily wearer or a dress watch. The watch is 39 mm, which is to my opinon the perfect size for a three-hand watch with little complications. The dial is well balanced with the power reserve indicator on the left and the small seconds dial on the right. I usually recommand bying watches with a metal bracelet, but I find the Grand Seiko SBGK007 looks better with the black leather strap. The silver dial is the star of the show, and the metal bracelet is too noticeable to my opinion. Keep in my the SBGK007 is powered by a manual caliber. This is a hassle for some people, but I have to say I enjoy to daily connect with my watch. The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch also has a manual caliber and this is part of the charm of the watch. Grand Seiko did a great job with the Elegance SBGK007, this can easily be a single collection watch.
