Pilot watches are expected to be big to improve readability. IWC Pilot Watch Chronograph Racing Green Edition has a 43mm diameter and 15mm thick steel case, so this is not a small watch. Fortunately the lugs are quite short, the lug-to-lug separation is 53.6 mm, the watch is thus sitting fine on a 16cm circumference wrist. The case is satin-polished, except for the small bevels along the flanks, which are polished.

The IWC pilot chronograph adopts a vertical tri-register layout. The WWII plane instrument style of the dial is undeniable. The counter 30min-subdial is located at 12 o'clock, the counter 12h-subdial is located at 6 o'clock, whereas the 60s-subdial is located at 9 o'clock.

The key feature of this new IWC Pilot Chronograph variation is its dial color. The watch comes with a stunning sunburst green dial. It is a beautiful Racing green color or British Green color. That means it a closer from a dark green tone than an Emerald of Jade color tone. In fact this is the color I am expecting on a Jaguar car.

The large rhodium-plated hour and minute sword hands are filled with Super-LumiNova. The counter second hand is printed in white color. The center of the rhodium-plated hands of the subdial at 6 and 12 o'clock is painted in white color, whereas the center of the hand of the subdial at 9 o'clock is painted in red color. It is a nice tough to easily distinguish the counter subdial from the second subdial.

The hour and minute tracks are printed on the main dial in white color. Large Arabic numerals indices and large rectangles are indicating the hour position, except at 12 o'clock where the hour index adopts a triangular shape. It should be noticed that only the hour indices at 3, 6, 9 and 12 are luminescent.

The day and date are indicated in two windows in the main dial at 3 o'clock. The day and date are written in black color on a white background. This improve the readability of this information. "IWC" is printed in white color above these windows, and "SCHAFFHAUSEN" is painted below.

The watch is powered by the caliber 79320 (high grade base ETA 7750). This self-winding cam chronograph caliber, based on a cam-architecture, beats at 28'800 v/h and has a 44 hour power reserve. The self-winding is provided by a uni-directional winding rotor. This caliber is known to be very robust but also quite noisy.

No transparent case back as expected on the pilot watch. The "6 BAR" water resistance and the "XXX/1000" watch number is engraved on the stainless steel case back.

The watch comes on a thin calf skin leather strap with white stitching and stainless steel signed pin buckle. The strap looks robust and fits well the pilot style of the watch.

The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal glass. This glass is secured against displacement induced by drops in air pressure.

I have to admit, the IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Edition Racing Green looks fantastic. The green sunburst dial is gorgeous. It is quite incongruous to find a pilot watch with dial color reminding of car racing. It surprisingly works very well for this chronograph. To me this is even more a car than a pilot watch to be honest. When looking at the dial it gives me the impression feel I am reading the dashboard instruments of a vintage British sports car. It could be a Jaguar, an Austin Healey or a Bentley. This watch is giving a lot of information: time, 30min and 12h counters, day, date. The legigility is great; the watch has a large diameter, but not too large, the Arabic numeral hour indices are big and contrast well with the dial color. I only regret that the hour Arabic numerals are not luminescent. That would have been awesome. The watch is powered by an ETA caliber, with a cam-architecture. That will disappoint some watch enthusiasts, but the ETA 7750 is a workhorse caliber. The watch is already not so cheap but the price would have been even higher if it was powered by an in-house caliber adopting a column-wheel architecture. Nevertheless, the IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Edition Racing Green is one of the prettiest chronograph I have seen in its price range and with only 1'000 pieces produced, I don't expect this watch to stay long in your AD display.
